Namibia registered a thrilling victory in the super over against Oman in the third T20 World Cup 2024 clash. Tied at 109 runs, the match went into the super over, with Namibia scoring 21 runs. Oman, in return, could score only 10 runs, giving Namibia two points.

Namibia won the toss and asked Oman to bat first on Barbados’ pitch. Oman’s batsmen were reduced to 10/3 within the first three overs, courtesy of Ruben Trumpelmann’s (4/21) and David Wiese’s (3/28) superlative performances. Zeeshan Maqsood (22 off 20) and Khalid Kail (34 off 39) attempted to stabilize the innings, but Gerhard Erasmus (2/20) slammed the door on Oman, bundling them for 109 runs.

Namibia appeared poised to chase down the target effortlessly, scoring 73 for two at one stage. But Aqib Iiyas (1/17) and Mehran Khan (3/7) bowled tight lines to check the run flow. Ultimately, Namibia scored exactly 109 runs in 20 overs and dragged the match into a super over.

Here are some moments of the match which have influenced the result:

Ruben Trumpelmann’s Spectacular Start

The Namibian squad kicked off the match on an exceptional note, with Ruben Trumpelmann orchestrating their success. The towering fast bowler stunned everyone by taking two wickets in the opening two balls, trapping both Omani batters. Though he narrowly missed a hat trick, Trumpelmann’s fiery spell set the tone, pushing Oman onto the back foot.

Partnership Disruptor Gerhard Erasmus

With Namibia’s bowlers in command, Oman lost four wickets within seven overs, teetering on the brink of collapse. Nonetheless, Ayaan Khan (15/21) and Khalid Kail mounted a fightback against Namibia’s bowlers. Just as they began shifting momentum, Gerhard Erasmus delivered the crucial wicket of Ayaan Khan, halting Oman’s resurgence.

David Wiese’s Death Over Mastery

Despite Oman being under pressure throughout their innings, Khalid Kail threatened to swing momentum their way. However, in the 18th over, facing David Wiese, Kail’s resistance was broken after hitting a six, only to be dismissed on the next delivery. Wiese’s double strike in that over, including Mehran Khan’s wicket, extinguished Oman’s hopes.

Wiese’s Clutch Performance in the Penultimate Over

Namibia faced immense pressure during the chase, with Oman’s bowlers tightening the noose in the death overs, reducing the equation to 14 runs from the last two overs. Although 14 runs might seem manageable, it felt like 24 under those conditions. David Wiese leveraged his experience to hit a crucial six off Bilal Khan (1/25) in the 19th, bringing the requirement down to five runs from the last two overs.

Wiese’s Performance in the Super Over

Despite needing only five runs from the final over, Oman managed to extend the game into the super over, seemingly favoured due to their momentum. However, David Wiese had other plans, scoring 10 runs from the first two balls, giving Namibia a substantial lead. Thanks to Wiese’s masterful performance, Namibia amassed 21 runs in the super over.
