Canada can now proudly call itself the hammer-throwing nation at Paris 2024 in the wake of Camryn Rogers taking gold in the hammer throw for Canada after Ethan Katzberg’s gold just 48 hours ago.

As with Ethan Katzberg, Rogers arrived with a lot of responsibilities on her shoulders. However, she has succeeded in surpassing all expectations with a gold medal and a name in history as the first-ever female Canadian medalist in women’s hammer throw.

The Canadian dynamo recorded 76.97m to win the gold medal, while the USA’s Nneka Annette Echikunwoke took silver with a distance of 75.48m, and Jie Zhao took bronze at 74.27m.

“I didn’t know what to do; I just felt like I just had to take a moment and process while I was in the cage. I heard everyone cheering, and I heard my coach screaming from the stands, and I looked over and saw my family just losing their minds. And I think that was when it was very clear to me: ‘Oh my God, this is it. It’s over, I did it. We did this thing.’’

“To be an Olympic champion — which sounds even weird coming out of my mouth right now — I mean, that’s something that you get to keep with you for your whole life, And it’s something that doesn’t just change your career, but can change the trajectory of everything you do moving forward.” said Camryn Rogers to National Post

There was a lot of excitement leading up to the final, but no one could have known that Camryn Rogers would shock the world by winning. When Rogers became the first female athlete from Canada to reach the hammer throw finals in Tokyo, everyone expected that she would be able to improve her standings in Paris, but she went all the way. Rogers registered a 74.69 throw in the qualification round, which was second in her round.

Golden Girl of Paris 2024

Camryn Rogers’ journey hasn’t been easy, but she has defied all expectations at every turn. When she made history at the Tokyo Olympics, she was just 22 years old and a student at the University of California. Although she finished fifth in 2021, her career turned upside down, and she inked new chapters at every opportunity.

She was the champion of the 2023 World Athletics Championships, which was an impressive achievement from Rogers coming into the Paris showdown. The victory of Rogers also marks the first gold medal for a Canadian woman in athletics since the 1928 games.
