Unruly behavior in sports seldom goes unnoticed these days. On Friday, the BCCI didn’t waste time in sanctioning batsman Shimron Hetmyer. The Rajasthan Royals batter smashed the wickets after being bowled by Sunrisers’ Abhishek Sharma in the IPL 2024 Qualifier 2 match at the Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Hetmyer’s action has been considered a Level 1 offense for which he has been fined 10% of his match fee. He is reported to have admitted to his offense.
“Shimron Hetmyer of the Rajasthan Royals has been fined 10% of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the Qualifier 2 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on May 24,” BCCI said in a statement.
The incident transpired in the 14th over of the second innings when Rajasthan was already 5 wickets down with 83 runs still to chase. Hetmyer was the last hope for the first-ever IPL champions. Pressure was building up, and he failed to judge a flat ball that knocked his off stump. Frustrated, he hit the wickets, which was against the game’s code of conduct.
Former Team India pacer Javagal Srinath, who was officiating as the match referee, imposed the sanction. “Hetmyer committed a Level 1 offense under Article 2.2 of the IPL Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offense and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” BCCI continued in its statement.
Ultimately, Rajasthan Royals fell short by 36 runs and missed another chance to make it to the IPL final. Shahbaz Ahmed, with 3/23 and 18 off 18, was named the Player of the Match.
