T20 World Cup 2024: Pakistan Announces Squad – Name Five Debutants

The Pakistan Cricket Board on Friday announced its 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup just a day ahead of the deadline. Babar Azam, who stepped down from captaincy after the 2023 Cricket World Cup, was reinstated as Pakistan’s white-ball captain earlier this year and will lead Pakistan for the third successive time in the T20 World Cup.

Of the 15 players, Abrar Ahmed, Azam Khan, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, Saim Ayub, and Usman Khan have been picked up for their maiden T20 World Cup, while Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim, who last played in 2016 and 2021, respectively, have been recalled in the squad.

The Pakistan Cricket Board, in a press release, rated this squad as extremely talented and a mixture of youth and experienced players. “This is an extremely talented and balanced side that has a mixture of youth and experience. These players have been playing together for some time and look well prepared and settled for next month’s event.”

Haris Rauf, who sustained a shoulder injury during the Pakistan Super League in February, is fit and ready to go, stated PCB’s selection committee in the press release. “Haris Rauf is fully fit and bowling well in the nets. It would have been nice if he had gotten an outing at Headingley, but we remain confident that he will continue to maintain an upward trajectory in the upcoming matches, as he will have an important role to play along with other strike bowlers in the T20 World Cup.”

With the likes of Haris Rauf, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Amir, and Abbas Afridi, Pakistan looks like a formidable pace bowling attack. It is pertinent to mention that Hasan Ali, who is with the team for the series against England, has been left out of the World Cup squad, and PCB has not announced any reserved players either.
