The most anticipated news in the cricket fraternity has just broken with Suryakumar Yadav succeeding Rohit Sharma as India’s T20I captain. The Men’s selection committee has selected a 15-man squad for the ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka starting July 27.
With Rohit and Virat Kohli retired from the shorter format following a successful T20 World Cup in the United States of America and the Caribbean, the governing body overlooked Hardik Pandya to opt for Suryakumar as the team’s skipper. However, Rohit Sharma will continue to lead the Indian side, which will consist of Virat Kohli, in the ODI format. Shubman Gill, who led a young Indian side to Zimbabwe recently, has been appointed as the deputy to the Mumbaikars in the T20I squad.

Despite impressive performances on the Zimbabwe tour, Abhishek Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad have been excluded from the T20I side. Ravindra Jadeja and Yuzvendra Chahal are notable omissions from India’s World Cup squad with Riyan Parag and Washington Sundar getting an opportunity. Sanju Samson, who scored a ton in his last ODI, is only a part of the T20I setup. KL Rahul has been marked as the wicketkeeper in his place, and Rishab Pant has been a constant across both squads.
Interestingly, Harshit Rana has found a place in both squads after impressing all with the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024. But Mukesh Kumar, who bagged a four-for in the fifth T20I against Zimbabwe, has been excluded.
Gambhir’s First Assignment
This will be Gautam Gambhir’s first assignment as India’s head coach, as the Men in Blue gears up to play three T20I and as many ODIs as possible, spanning from July 27 to August 2. The shorter format will be played at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele, while the 50-over contest will be staged at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
