Dravid in Line to Replace Sangakkara as RR Coach

Former Indian national team head coach Rahul Dravid is poised for a significant reunion as IPL 2025 approaches, with crucial support from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Sri Lankan cricket icon Kumar Sangakkara. According to a report by Cricbuzz, the ECB is contemplating appointing Sangakkara, who currently serves as the coach and director of cricket for the Rajasthan Royals (RR), as their new white-ball coach. This consideration comes after Matthew Mott’s abrupt resignation from the role last month.

Should Sangakkara decide to accept the position with the England team, an opening would be created at Rajasthan Royals. This situation would facilitate a smooth transition, potentially allowing Dravid, a former RR captain and coach, to rejoin the franchise. Despite the ongoing speculation about Sangakkara’s future, he has conveyed his contentment with his present role at RR. Over the past four years, Sangakkara has made significant contributions to the team and has established strong connections within the franchise.

Sangakkara’s rapport with key figures such as Rob Key, the managing director of England’s men’s cricket team, and his association with Jos Buttler, the England captain and RR player, might influence the ECB’s decision. The relationship with Buttler could be particularly impactful, given their shared history at RR.

In the meantime, the ECB is actively seeking a successor for Matthew Mott as the white-ball head coach. Although the search has commenced, no shortlist of candidates has been finalized. The board plans to conduct formal interviews to identify the most suitable candidate. Last week, the ECB appointed Marcus Trescothick as the interim coach for England’s white-ball teams for the upcoming limited-overs series against Australia.

The selection process for the new white-ball coach is still in its preliminary stages. An ECB official has confirmed that while the interview process will take place, a shortlist has yet to be created. England and Australia are scheduled to play three T20 internationals and five One-Day Internationals starting September 11. Meanwhile, the Ben Stokes-led England team is gearing up for a three-match Test series against Sri Lanka at home.

Ultimately, the potential movement of Kumar Sangakkara to England’s coaching staff could pave the way for Rahul Dravid’s return to Rajasthan Royals, reflecting a period of transition and opportunity for both cricketing giants.
