During the Paris 2024 Olympics, Canadian athletes have demonstrated exceptional abilities. While younger athletes have undoubtedly delivered awe-inspiring performances, seasoned athletes have also lived up to expectations. Among these notable individuals is Ethan Katzberg, a Canadian star who was widely regarded as a contender for the gold medal. Recently concluded Hammer Throws served as a testament to the validity of these predictions.
As the 9th day of Paris 2024 drew to a close, Ethan Katzberg delivered an 84.12m throw to add another gold to the kitty of Canada after Summer McIntosh‘s dominance in swimming. Having started his day with a bit of rhythm, he crossed the 82.28-meter mark on his first attempt only.
The fact that silver medalist Bence Halasz of Hungary was able to throw 79.97m speaks volumes about Katzberg’s dominance in the event. The bronze medal was won by Ukrainian Mykhaylo Kokhan with a throw of 79.39 meters.
“I don’t think I expected it, but I had the preparation in mind to get a good round on the first throw, and to throw 84 metres felt really good,” Katzberg said to Sportstar.
Rain Of Records For Katzberg At Paris 2024
Ethan Katzberg is only 22 years old and his gold medal at Paris 2024 has inked his name in multiple history books at once. Aside from becoming the youngest Olympian and world champion, the Canadian also ended a 112-year medal drought for Canada in the hammer throw.
The last medal in hammer throw came way back in 1912 from Duncan Gillis who won silver at the Stockholm Olympics.
In spite of his young age, Katzberg has already achieved a lot in his career, winning a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games and gold medals at the World Athletics Championships and Pan American Games in 2023.
Surprising results
Ethan Katzberg lived up to all the hype and expectations for the gold medal, but other results were quite surprising. Wojciech Nowicki, the defending champion, finished 7th with a throw of 77.42m while Eivind Henriksen, the silver medalist, threw 79.18m.
In spite of big upsets and surprising results, Ethan Katzberg triumphed with his best effort and considering his dominance at the age of 22 and upward trajectory of a career, it appears that Canada has many more glorious appearances to look forward to in future events.
