With the Paris 2024 Olympics in line, Canada won its bet on its athletes after investing a $ 55 million infusion into the sports system. Which is the largest investment in the Athletes Assistance Program ever invested. It paid off. Scaling from 24 medals in Tokyo to 27 in Paris in just three years is a big sign of Canada’s step toward supremacy in sports.
With the highest medal at a fully attended Olympic Summer Games, the nation’s success was not solely attributed to its iconic athletes. Emerging talents played a pivotal role in this historic achievement.
Let’s delve into the young athletes that took the limelight this Paris 2024 Olympics-
Boxing
With boxing on the brink of Olympic extinction in 2028, the Canadians yearned for a medal in the sport and did as they desired. Wyatt Stanford was the sole reason to roll back history in boxing for Canada as he won the first medal at the Olympics after 28 years.
This 25-year-old was unflinching in his quest to make a mark at the Paris Olympics. After extreme diets and long training sessions, he dropped to 63.5kg from 69 kg. Ultimately, it paid off with a shining bronze medal.
The success of Wyatt Sanford could be the turning point for the amateur boxing scene in Canada, which is currently struggling to rekindle the buzz for boxing with new fans.
Beach volleyball
First, to reach the semi-finals, and then to reach the final, the youngest duo in beach volleyball will win the Paris. Beach volleyball duo Melissa Humanao Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson have taken on all the potential historical moments.
Playing at one of the most beautiful venues in the Paris 2024 Olympics, they had the most magical triumph. Completing their fairytale script of resurgence by defying the odds of surpassing the quarterfinals was a dream come true.
The duo’s silver is an upgrade from Canada’s 1996 Athena medal, a far too long medal halt for the team.
Diving
Canada seems to love and dominate at the pool. Having exemplary medals in swimming and diving couldn’t lose to return with no moments of their own, and Rylan Wiens and Nathan Zsombor-Murray owned it. Murray won Canada its first-ever Olympic medal in the men’s synchronized 10m platform event.
A perfectly synchronized performance etched Canada’s name back into the Olympic medal history books, Canada’s first medal after Alexandre Despatie’s silver medal in Beijing in 2008.
Rugby Sevens
Making a grand move just on the 4th day boosted Canada’s hope for a stellar performance. Rugby seven team spirited fightback throughout the series bagged them the glorious silver. Entering as the fifth-best team, they stunned rugby juggernauts at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Their impeccable wins over France and Australia kept them hoping to claim gold, but a loss to New Zealand set them on the road to settling for silver. Which still is heir best Olympic performance
Pole Vault
Aside from the reclaimed medals and Summer McIntosh tri gold, Canadians were treated to a surprise from the Paul vault discipline that brought cheers as high as the bar. Canadians can’t leave the city of light without a photo finish.
And thanks to Alysha Newman, Canada recorded its first ever Olympic medalist in the women’s pole vault and after 112 years ato claim any medal since 1912. Despite the controversy that followed, she made a historic record for Canada’s highest record by clearing the 4.85m mark.
Taekwondo
Not just the sensors but Canada’s Skyler Park knows how to kick some medals to her corner. Despite a close miss to the medal stance she ascended the mat with regal authority on her repechage and won bronze in women’s 57 kg.
The chance came after a long standoff in the stadium, but Park made it all worthwhile. Winning Canada’s only medal in the discipline at the Paris 2024 Olympics was a feat worthy of celebration. Coming from a clan of black belt holders she made not just them but the entire nation proud.
