Summer McIntosh won a record breaking gold in the women’s 200m butterfly at La Defense Arena in Paris 2024 Olympics. The sensational 17-year-old finished her sprint in 2:03:03 minutes, breaking the 2:03.86 Olympic record, China’s Zhang Yufei set in Tokyo 2020. The Chinese finished third, while Regan Smith of US won the silver.
McIntosh started the race in the top three before overtaking Yufei at 50 meters mark. She soon surged into the top gear and finished ahead of Regan Smith who stayed close throughout.
Two Golds & A Silver For McIntosh
With two golds in Paris 2024, the four-time World Aquatics champion became only the third Canadian and the only female swimmer to achieve this feat. George Hodgson in 1912 and Alex Baumann in 1984 are the two other Canadian’s who won two golds in a single edition.
Moreover, there was something sweeter about this gold for youngster. In the Los Angeles 1984 Olympics, a young swimmer Jill Horstead took part in the same event and finished ninth. After 40 years, Jill was back in the stand cheering, pumping her heart out for Summer McIntosh – her daughter.
“It’s pretty cool winning the 200 fly because that, by far, was [her mother’s] main event,” McIntosh said to Olympic.com. “So to share that moment with her is pretty cool. I know she is so proud of me along with the rest of my family. I can’t thank them enough,” she added.
Ninety minutes after her second Paris 2024 gold, Summer was in the pool once again. She was attempting her fourth medal in the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay. The team however finished fourth, despite McIntosh making up lots of ground in her turn. They (Mcintosh, Harvey, Jansen and Julie) were a good six seconds short of the Bronze winning Chinese team. Australia won gold and the United States took silver.
Prior to this, McIntosh won gold in the women’s 400m individual medley and also got silver in the 400m freestyle. She still has women’s 200m individual medley to compete this Saturday.
