Following a 16 hours flight journey from Barbados to New Delhi, the Indian team received an electrifying welcome from the fans and the nation’s high authorities following their T20 World Cup victory. After a delayed departure from the Caribbean islands due to the onset of Hurricane Beryl, the Indian team members were invited for breakfast with Prime Minister Narendra Modi followed by a felicitation event in Mumbai.
The highway in Marine Drive was jampacked with a plethora of fans for the arrival of the Indian cricket team. Rohit Sharma and co. were welcomed in grand fashion with an open bus victory parade. Right after, the Champions entered the Wankhede Stadium with loud applause in a packed 33000 cauldron.
This is when Virat Kohli was summoned for a brief interview with presenter Gaurav Kapoor in the center of the field. The Indian stalwart was taken aback by the warm gesture from the fans and eventually heaped praise on Bumrah behind one of their primary cause of the World Cup triumph. Kohli was open to accepting that the chips were down, and one point in time, the match was slipping away from them.
“Like everyone in the stadium [here], we also felt at one point if it is going to slip away again, but what happened in those [last] five overs was truly, truly special,” Kohli said, at the team’s felicitation on Wednesday night.
The 35-year-old asked the audience to laud Bumrah, the Player of the Tournament, for his stupendous performance with the ball after Gaurav cited the bowler as the ‘eighth wonder of the world’.

“You know what I’d like everyone to do is applaud a guy who brought us back into games again and again and again in this tournament. What he did in those last five overs, bowling two out of the last five overs, it was phenomenal. A huge round of applause for Jasprit Bumrah, please.”
The South African side smacked 38 runs in a couple of overs to bring down the equation to run-a-ball-30 in the grand finale at the Kensington Oval, Barbados. However, Bumrah’s introduction allowed them only six runs in his last two-over spell and a wicket of Marco Jansen. This set up nicely for Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya to execute their plans as India pulled the trigger at the cue end and won by seven runs.
Kohli also expressed the emotions in the last four days since winning the silverware.
“The last four days have been a roller-coaster of a ride. As soon as we won the World Cup, we wanted to get out of Barbados, get back to India, and celebrate with everyone. We got stuck in the hurricane, so it was an anti-climatic feeling. But since we’ve been back, it’s been phenomenal, he added.
