Five Teams With Fewest Loss in the IPL History

There is no doubt that the Indian Premier League has become the epicenter of T20 cricket and is arguably the most competitive competition in the world. Even if you compare the IPL to the T20 World Cup, IPL is far more competitive than that. With auctions happening every year, teams are always striving to upgrade their squad. Gujarat Titans, which were champions in 2022 and finalists in 2023, were 6th this season can be seen as best example of IPL’s competitive nature.

History shows us that there have been teams that have dominated the competition from beginning to end and not only won the competition but also stamped their authority on it. This season, Kolkata Knight Riders did the same with only three losses and one-sided playoff games. We will examine such dominant teams from the past and look at the teams that have lost the fewest matches from their campaigns.

Let’s take a look at the five teams with the fewest losses in IPL seasons:

Mumbai Indians (2019)- 5 losses

In the last few years, Mumbai Indians have lost their charm, but in the 2019 season, they were at their peak of power and are always a side to watch. They have won five titles, and are a team to watch for whenever a new season begins. Their dominance in the tournament was stamped on in the 2019 season when they dominated every team in front of them.

Despite starting the season on a low note with a big loss against Delhi Capitals, they never looked back after the first match. Before the start of the season, they traded Quinton de Kock from RCB and he turned out to be their X-factor. Mumbai won only five games that season and continued their dominance in the playoffs as well, beating Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk in their first qualifier and defeating Chennai in a nail-biter in the final.

Mumbai Indians (2020)- 5 losses

When it comes to domination, Mumbai Indians from the 2020 season can be seen as synonymous with it. They were defending champions that season and started their campaigns similarly. There was everything in that Mumbai line-up, with Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock opening, Surya Kumar Yadav at number three, Ishant Kishan at four, and Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, and Krunal Pandya completing the job in the death overs.

In the bowling lineup, Jasprit Bumrah led the pack with Trent Boult providing early breakthroughs. The spin department was also strong with Rahul Chahar and Jayant Yadav providing great balance to the team. In that season, the Mumbai Indians lost only five games, and two of those were super over losses.

In addition to a comfortable tournament, the Mumbai Indians had a one-sided playoff win, providing some insight into their dominance.

Gujarat Titans (2022)- 4 losses

As one of the new entrants, Gujarat Titans entered the 2022 season with a new captain in Hardik Pandya, which raised questions about whether it was a great move or a terrible one. Gujarat Titans had assembled a decent squad after auctions, but looking at names no one could’ve imagined, they’d redefine IPL dominance.

With the duo of Ashish Nehra and Hardik Pandya at the helm for Gujarat Titans, they browbeaten every team they met that season. They found new heroes every time, and old horses like David Miller and Mohammed Shami, who had been written off, rose from ashes to have a rejuvenated season.

That season, Gujarat Titans only lost four games and dominated the entire season. They had many last ball finishes but luck was on their side most of the time. Hardik Pandya and his men had an absolutely stunning campaign, which was the first time in a long time that IPL was dominated like it was.

Kolkata Knight Riders (2024)- 3 losses

After two disappointing seasons, the Kolkata Knight Riders entered the 2024 season with high expectations. They brought in Gautam Gambhir, their former captain, which turned out to be a masterstroke. From the very first game, Kolkata Knight Riders showed their deadly intentions and were in beast mode.

With Sunil Narine at the top of the order, they employed the same tactics they used in 2017, but this time with Phil Salt and Narine both hitting hard. However, their bowling made the biggest difference. There were six bowlers who took more than 10 wickets: Mitchell Starc, Vaibhav Arora, Harshit Rana, Sunil Narine, Varun Chakarborty, and Andre Russell.

KKR finished the season with only three defeats, making them the one of most successful teams of recent times. While it’s true that they had two washouts, you can’t deny the fact that KKR bulldozed every opponent this season.

Rajasthan Royal (2008)- 3 losses

IPL’s debut season was the beginning of everything. Until this day, Rajasthan Royals’ campaign remains the most dominant of any IPL team. No one predicted this outcome before the start of the season, as every analyst predicted the Royals would finish in the bottom three. Despite 16 years of competition, Shane Warner’s team defied all expectations and set a record that has not been matched.

Despite having so many unknown faces, the Rajasthan Royals only lost 3 games in the whole campaign. Yusuf Pathan, as well as Ravindra Jadeja, were two finds of the first season. Although the team hasn’t won since then, the stamp of dominance they established in the first season may never be matched.
