Afghanistan (101/3) effortlessly surpassed Papua New Guinea (95/10) by seven wickets, securing their place in the Super 8 at the legendary Brian Lara Stadium, Trinidad. PNG, batting first, were stifled by Fazalhaq Farooqi’s (3/16) exceptional performance with the new ball, limiting them to a mere 95 runs. Despite a few setbacks in the chase, Gulbadin Naib’s (49/36) composure ensured Afghanistan’s victory.

Complete Scorecard

Rashid Khan (0/25) won the toss and boldly chose to bowl first, defying the pitch’s history. Farooqi justified his captain’s decision with two swift wickets in his opening over. PNG struggled to recover from this early setback as Naveen Ul Haq (2/4) and Noor Ahmed (1/14) maintained relentless pressure, dismantling PNG for just 95 runs.

Afghanistan also faced early challenges, with star openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (11/7) and Ibrahim Zadran (0/7) dismissed within three overs. However, the experienced Gulbadin Naib stabilized the innings, with support from Mohammad Nabi (16/23) and Azmatullah Omarzai (13/18), guiding Afghanistan to a safe finish.

Afghanistan’s relentless performance, qualifying from the “group of death” with a game to spare, is remarkable. While their batting remains untested, their bowling has been phenomenal. PNG, on the other hand, needs significant improvement to compete at this level, though their bowling shows promise.

Five Defining Moments of the Match

Farooqi’s Impressive Start

Fazalhaq Farooqi has been Afghanistan’s most potent weapon in this World Cup with the new ball, continuing his dominance against PNG. The left-arm pacer claimed two wickets in the first two balls of the match, giving Afghanistan a crucial early advantage and putting PNG on the back foot from the onset. Farooqi’s mastery with the new ball has been pivotal, and with their qualification secured for the Super 8, Afghanistan has a genuine chance of achieving something extraordinary.

Noor Ahmed’s Tactful Spell

By the time Noor Ahmed began his spell in the 7th over, PNG had already lost half their side within the powerplay. Ahmed maintained the pressure, ensuring PNG found runs hard to come by. Playing in only his second T20 World Cup match, Ahmed showed no signs of nerves, finishing with one wicket for just 14 runs, creating opportunities for wickets from the other end.

Gulbadin Naib’s Escape

After losing two wickets within three overs, their star openers back in the dugout, Afghanistan was in dire straits. The responsibility fell on the shoulders of the experienced Gulbadin Naib. PNG missed a golden opportunity to dismiss him when he was on 9 runs. Had Kiplin Doriga (27/32) caught that ball, Naib would have been out, and the match narrative could have been vastly different.

Naib and Omarzai’s Composed Partnership

Following the early setbacks, Afghanistan needed to bat with maturity and keep the scoreboard ticking to avoid run rate pressure. Gulbadin Naib and Azmatullah Omarzai played with poise during the middle overs, negating the pressure from PNG’s bowlers and ensuring Afghanistan stayed on track for victory.

Mohammad Nabi’s Steady Finish

Caribbean pitches can be unpredictable, and one wicket can alter the course of a match. Afghanistan faced a similar situation against PNG. Mohammad Nabi joined Naib at the crease after Omarzai’s dismissal, with 41 runs still needed. Nabi’s crucial innings of 16 runs ensured Afghanistan avoided late scares and secured a smooth finish.

Afghanistan has officially qualified for the Super 8 and will face the West Indies on the 18th at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia. Although this game will not impact their qualification, it will prepare them for the challenging encounters in the Super 8. Having been thoroughly outplayed in the first innings, PNG needs to capitalize on their chances if they hope to compete. They will face New Zealand on June 17th at Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba, Trinidad.
