Mumbai Indians (174/3) registered a comfortable 7-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (173/8), keeping the league open to all teams and fans on the hook.

Hardik Pandya (3/31) won the toss and decided to invite Sunrisers Hyderabad to bat. It seemed that Pandya’s decision would be a disaster for Mumbai, but Travis Head (48/30) and Abhishek Sharma (11/16) never achieved their trademark free flowing gameplay. In the last over of the powerplay, Jasprit Bumrah (1/23) dismissed struggling Sharma. Promoting Mayank Agarwal (5/6) at No.3 also failed, but Travis Head and Nitish Reddy (20/15) forged a good partnership to rebuilt the innings.

Veteran Piyush Chawla (3/33), however, turned the game on its head. By taking wickets of Head and Heinrich Klaasen (2/4), he broke the backbone of Hyderabad’s batting order. In the end, SRH fought back to score 173 runs thanks to Pat Cummins’ (35/17) inspiring performance. Mumbai started the chase well putting up 20-quick runs on the board. But soon after Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1/22) and Pat Cummins (1/35) made a comeback and restricted Mumbai to 31/3 in 4.1 overs. But Suryakumar Yadav (102/51) scored his second IPL ton to bail out Mumbai from the slumber and with Tilak Varma (37/32), chased down 173 runs with 16 balls to spare.

The league table is wide open following Mumbai’s win, which can largely be attributed to these five defining moments.

Piyush Chawla’s dream spell

Mumbai Indians have lacked a class spinner in the middle overs this season, but their first choice Piyush Chawla has looked in his best form recently. After being taken to the cleaners the last time both teams met in Hyderabad, the UP-born leg-spinner dismissed Head and Klaasen in a span of two overs to give Mumbai a huge advantage. The wicket of Klaasen with that googly was a highlight.

Hardik Pandya’s double trouble over

For all Indian Cricket fans, Hardik Pandya’s bowling is one of the biggest highlights of this year’s World Cup. The Mumbai captain was in absolute control with the ball, taking three wickets for 31 runs. It was his 16th over in particular that changed the game. After facing middle collapse, Shahbaz Ahmed (10/12) and Marco Jansen (17/12) built a small partnership and looked threatening before Pandya came to action.

Jasprit Bumrah’s overall package

Mumbai Indians had a good day at work and as usual, Bumrah was their star. The Indian speedster only went for 23 runs and took big wicket of Abhisek Sharma. Bumrah has been scintillating this season where batters are enjoying flat wickets. Also in this game, Mumbai Indians’ bowlers were going at expensive rates prior to Bumrah’s arrival which changed dynamics.

Suryakumar Yadav’s 7th attack against Jansen

After losing early wickets in powerplay, Mumbai Indians looked down. However, Surya turned out to be at his best and counterattacked Hyderabad’s bowlers. While the scoreboard tells a different tale, Mumbai were struggling at 36 runs for 3 wickets at the end of the fifth over. However, Sky sent Marco Jansen (1/45) all over the park in the seventh over, which changed everything. From the over, Sky scored 22 runs, which shifted the entire situation in their favor.

Marco Jansen’s second moving over

In his outing against Mumbai Indians, Marco Jansen struggled and was heavily influenced by the Sky’s brilliance. After conceding 22 runs, Jansen returned in the 13th over hoping for revenge, but Sky was waiting to hunt him down. With 14 runs off the over, the Indian 360 degree star eased down the equation, solving the middle muddle of the chase.

After winning the fourth match of the season, the Mumbai Indians have climbed up to the ninth spot. This has opened the door for teams like Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants to make playoffs. They will now travel to Eden Gardens where Parimatch has given them odds of 2.00x. Though Sunrisers Hyderabad is still ranked fourth, they are vulnerable since they face Lucknow Super Giants on May 8th at home. Parimatch is offering odds of 1.72x for Hyderabad.
