Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, Lucknow SuperGiants (LSG) have reportedly approached former Indian cricketer Zaheer Khan to join their coaching staff in a dual capacity. Having reached the playoffs twice in their three IPL seasons, LSG is looking to strengthen their coaching lineup after the departure of key personnel. Gautam Gambhir, who had served as the team’s mentor, left to rejoin Kolkata Knight Riders for the same role in 2024. Additionally, LSG lost their bowling coach, Morne Morkel, who will join Gambhir’s coaching staff with the Indian men’s team.

As per a report by Cricbuzz, the former Indian pacer might step into the roles of mentor and bowling coach for LSG if the agreement is finalized, this would mark his second coaching stint in the IPL, having previously worked with Mumbai Indians.

Zaheer was once in consideration for the Indian team’s bowling coach position. However, Gautam Gambhir, who had worked with Morne Morkel during their time at LSG, recommended Morkel for the role. Zaheer’s potential return to IPL coaching is notable given his illustrious career as a fast bowler. He played a pivotal role in Indian cricket during a time when the team lacked depth in fast bowling talent. Zaheer, who played 92 Tests, 200 ODIs, 17 T20Is, and 100 IPL matches, was instrumental in India’s bowling attack, particularly known for his skill with the new ball and his mastery of reverse swing.
