Key Moments

Dawid Malan Departs for a Duck

The left-handed batter spearheaded the innings for Invincibles but failed to make an impact in The Hundred contest. Malan fell to his compatriot David Willey on the 14th ball of the innings, dismissed for a duck after facing four balls. Willey’s early breakthrough provided a solid start to Welsh Fire in the powerplay.

Jake Ball’s Impressive Bowling

The right-arm pacer proved too hot to handle for the Invincibles, who succumbed to his bowling prowess. Jake removed Sam Billings (3 off 6), Donovan Ferreira (30 off 23), and Spencer Johnson (0 off 2) in his spell, putting Invincibles in deep waters. His impressive bowling performance restricted the Oval side to a paltry 113 runs in 100 balls.

Fire’s Shaky Start

In pursuit of 113 runs, Welsh Fire got off to a shaky start, losing wickets at regular intervals. Tom Kohler-Cadmore (22 off 33) and Jonny Bairstow (5 off 8) added 19 runs for the first wicket, but after Bairstow was dismissed, the Welsh side lost a flurry of wickets in quick succession, tottering at 62/7 in 79 balls. The dismal batting performance from Tom Abell and his team left them in deep trouble in what was a modest chase.

Adam Zampa’s Magic

The Australian leg-spinner was named Hero of the Match for his impressive bowling performance in the Invincibles’ inaugural contest in The Hundred. Once again, Zampa dazzled with his spin magic, toppling the opposition and earning back-to-back Hero of the Match awards. It is pertinent to mention that Zampa is the leading wicket-taker in The Hundred 2024, grabbing six wickets in two matches.

Implications and Future Prospects

Welsh Fire’s bowlers were impressive in this contest, but their batters faltered in the chase due to poor shot selection. Jonny Bairstow, Joe Clarke, Tom Abell, and Glenn Phillips are a few key players in the batting department, who need to find their footing in The Hundred event. Tom Kohler-Cadmore looked sluggish at the top of the order, scoring only 22 runs off 33 balls. If Kohler-Cadmore had scored at a run-a-ball rate, Welsh Fire might have won the match.

Conversely, the Invincibles’ batters also looked lackluster, but their bowlers stepped up and successfully defended 113 runs. The top and middle-order batters will need to fire in the upcoming matches of The Hundred.
