Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has resigned as the T20I captain following criticism over the team’s performance at the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup. Under his leadership, Sri Lanka managed only one win in four games and failed to advance to the Super 8 stage.
The Sri Lanka Cricket Board announced Hasaranga’s resignation on its official website. They wrote, “ Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to inform the public that National Men’s T20I Captain Wanindu Hasaranga has decided to resign from the captaincy.”
Per the statement released by Sri Lanka Cricket, Hasaranga mentioned in his resignation letter that the decision was in the team’s best interest. The 26-year-old added, “Sri Lanka will always have my utmost best efforts as a player, and I will support and stand by my team and leadership as always.”
The Debacle
The recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2024 was disappointing for Sri Lanka, as they did not advance to the Super Eights. They suffered defeats at the hands of South Africa and Bangladesh during the group stage and managed only one victory against the Netherlands. Additionally, their match against Nepal was abandoned due to rain. Accumulating just three points, Sri Lanka ended up in third place in Group D.

Hasaranga’s resignation marks the second departure in the Sri Lankan side following head coach Chris Silverwood’s resignation after the disappointing World Cup performance.
The leg break and right-handed assumed the T20I captaincy from Dasun Shanaka just last year and led Sri Lanka in ten T20I matches. Under his leadership, Sri Lanka secured six victories and suffered four losses.
Sri Lanka’s upcoming international engagement is a home bilateral series against India, featuring three T20Is and three ODIs, beginning on July 26. The captain for the T20I matches has yet to be decided, and the team will be under the interim guidance of Sri Lankan veteran Sanath Jayasuriya as head coach.
