After being invited to bat first, the Patriots lost their skipper Andre Fletcher in the form of a run out on the third ball of the match. However, Evin Lewis and Kyle Mayers scored briskly and added 54 runs in the powerplay, providing the Patriots a good start. The dynamic duo continued their authority and pummeled the Kings bowlers to all corners of the park.

Faf du Plessis experimented with different strategies to break this partnership but was unsuccessful. Lewis and Mayers forged a pivotal 199-run partnership for the second wicket, with the latter falling just eight runs short of his century on the fourth ball of the final over. Meanwhile, Lewis remained unbeaten and scored a century, propelling the Patriots’ total to 201 runs in 20 overs.

Saint Lucia Kings Lackluster Start

In pursuit of a hefty 201 runs, the Saint Lucia Kings got off to a disastrous start, suffering a collapse in the powerplay. Kyle Mayers and Anrich Nortje bowled tight lines and lengths, removing Johnson Charles, Faf du Plessis, Ackeem Auguste, and Roston Chase cheaply within the first four overs. The sluggish performance from the Kings’ top-order batters left them in a precarious situation.

After losing a flurry of wickets in the powerplay, Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Tim Seifert started the rescue mission for the Kings and forged a pivotal partnership. The Kiwi wicket-keeper batter, Seifert, went honkers and bonkers from the outset and helped the Saint Lucia side post fifty runs at the end of the powerplay.

The Sri Lankan batter, Rajapaksa, also switched gears and took on the Patriots bowlers, smashing boundaries for fun. The pair kept ticking the scoreboard at a rapid pace and notched up their respective fifties on the occasion. They glued 103 runs for the fifth wicket and helped their side recover from a dire situation. Seifert departed after smashing 64 runs off 27 balls, but Rajapaksa remained unbeaten on 68 runs off 35 balls.

David Wiese’s Finish

Following the wicket of Seifert, Namibian all-rounder David Wiese joined Rajapaksa in the middle, and the pair added an unbeaten 75 runs for the sixth wicket. Wiese, the right-hander, smashed an unbeaten 34 runs off 20 balls, securing victory for his side with 16 balls to spare.

Implications and Future Prospects

@SaintLuciaKings

Saint Lucia Kings start their CPL 2024 journey on a high note. Despite losing four wickets in the powerplay, the Saint Lucia-based franchise easily secured victory, showing their batting depth. Johnson Charles (12 off 12), Faf du Plessis (2 off 4), Ackeem Auguste (6 off 4), and Roston Chase (4 of 3) failed in the Kings’ inaugural match of CPL 2024 and will aim to contribute in the upcoming games. However, their bowling department struggled in this contest, with Wiese being the only bowler to take a couple of wickets.

Conversely, the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots have lost two games in a row out of the three matches they’ve played in CPL 2024. Evin Lewis and Kyle Mayers’ scintillating knocks went in vain as their bowlers failed to maintain the new-ball momentum, leaking runs regularly and ultimately failing to defend 201 runs. Andre Fletcher and Co. need to make amends and aim to return to winning ways in the upcoming match.
