The South Indian State of Tamil Nadu is set to boast two world-class cricket venues soon, with a new stadium reportedly planned for Coimbatore. According to a report from DT Next, the Tamil Nadu Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister MK Stalin, has initiated tenders to draft a detailed project report for the construction of this state-of-the-art stadium in the city’s western region. The state’s Sports Department has called for bids to be submitted within a month.

The Tamil Nadu Sports Department has recommended the MA Chidambaram Stadium, located in Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Chepauk constituency, and the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru as live venues.

The state government’s ambitious plan is to create a venue with the largest seating capacity in the country, surpassing the 132,000-seat Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, which currently holds the title of the world’s largest cricket stadium.

The proposed stadium will feature not only extensive seating but also public amenities such as cafeterias, restaurants, viewing galleries, and a cricket museum. For players, the stadium will include a specialized indoor fielding zone and a high-performance center.

The report further mentions that the stadium will be located 16 kilometers outside Coimbatore city, along NH 544, which connects Salem in Tamil Nadu to Kochi in the southernmost state of Kerala. The State Prisons Department currently owns 200 acres of land at this location, and 198 acres are expected to be acquired for the stadium once the detailed project report is finalized. Chief Minister MK Stalin had pledged the construction of a new international cricket stadium in Coimbatore as part of his party’s manifesto during the Lok Sabha elections in April.

In a recent tweet, CM Stalin expressed his commitment to delivering this world-class facility to the people of Tamil Nadu. He said, “We will take efforts to establish a state-of-the-art cricket stadium in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore, with the active participation of the sports loving people of Coimbatore. As highlighted by our Minister Dr TRB Raja, this stadium aims to be Tamil Nadu’s second international-standard cricket venue after Chennai’s iconic MAC stadium. Our government and Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin are committed to nurturing talent and enhancing sports infrastructure in Tamil Nadu.”

This upcoming venue will complement Tamil Nadu’s capital Chennai’s iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium, commonly known as Chepauk, located near the city’s famous Marina Beach. Established in 1916, Chepauk is India’s second-oldest cricket stadium, after Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, and has hosted 34 Test matches, with the first being played between India and England in 1934.
