The Canadian Men’s Basketball team advanced to the playoffs after securing a thrilling 88-85 win over Spain to finish group A unbeaten in Paris 2024. This is Canada’s best possible shot of winning the gold after proving their early credentials by topping the group.
It was an end-to-end action of Basketball as Canada and Spain contested in a thrilling Paris 2024 match. The first quarter ended with both teams exchanging baskets to finish at level 19-19. The Red and White started the second quarter on a mission as they took a comfortable 30-19 lead to end the first half strong. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was the star of the show after scoring 13 points for the team in the first half.
With their fate in the Paris 2024 at stake, Spain demonstrated plenty of fight. They started the third quarter on a positive note, registering a 15-18 to get back into the game. However, despite their best efforts in the fourth quarter, they fell short by three points after it finished 24-29. After scoring 16 of Spain’s points in the fourth quarter, Dario Brizuela tried his best to secure the win for the team.
At one point, it looked like Spain would make a comeback in the match after reducing the gap to 82-80 with less than a minute left. However, the two Canadian players Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and RJ Barrett combined with the latter scoring a three pointer to turn the match in their favour.

- During the first half, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 13 points and kept Spain at bay by scoring three free throws in the last minute of the game to secure the victory. In addition to scoring 20 points and three rebounds, he also scored three free throws during the last minute to prevent Spain from attacking.
- Andrew Nembhard also had a big hand in Canada’s win after registering 18 points with two assists and a steal. RJ Barret scored 16 points, and 3 assists, while Dillon Brooks stepped up with 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists to take Canada to the victory. It was a complete team effort from the unit
Off Day for the Women’s 3×3 Basketball at Paris 2024
The Canadian women’s 3×3 basketball team suffered back to back losses on Friday.
They took on the USA in the first match which ended at 16 apiece. While the match shifted to over time. Kathrine scored the one pointer after the Plouffe sisters combined well. However, ten seconds later, USA responded by shooting a two-pointer from deep, laying the game to a buzzer beater.
Next up was crucial match against Spain where both sides put forth excellent performances to tie the game at 20-20. After reaching over time, Spain prevailed after connecting a step-back two-pointer. Despite Canada losing the game, M. Plouffe still managed to score 11 points and 6 rebounds, and K. Plouffe scored six more points and 5 rebounds to give Canada a glimmer of hope.
