Delhi Capitals are not considering Sourav Ganguly as head coach for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL). This decision comes amid widespread speculation and rumors linking the former Indian cricket captain to the team. As per media reports, the Capitals have clarified that they are focused on a different direction for their coaching staff, prioritizing stability and continuity with their existing team.
This news comes after the Delhi Capitals management sacked their head coach Ricky Ponting. The franchise shared an emotional and heartfelt message for the former Australian captain, but it has been made clear that Ponting’s performance has not satisfied the management despite being given seven years. Ponting, a two-time World Cup winner, joined Delhi Capitals seven years ago and has been an integral part of the unit. Although the team reached its first final in 2021, their subsequent performances have not lived up to that initial promise.

Embarrassment for Ganguly
Sourav Ganguly, who broke the news himself, has been left embarrassed. The Delhi Capitals Director of Cricket told, “ I have to plan for next year’s IPL. I want to win the IPL for the Delhi Capitals once. The mega auction is next year, so I have started planning from now on. Let me break the news. Ricky Ponting will not be the head coach of the Delhi Capitals. Geoffrey Boycott was right, as Ponting has not been able to take the franchise forward in the past 7 years. I have to speak with the franchise and ask them to look at Indian coaches. I will be the head coach. Let’s see how I perform,”
Furthermore, the report mentions that DC is discussing the head coach position with two former World Cup-winning cricketers. Despite being one of the original eight teams in the league, DC has yet to win an IPL title, leading to these structural changes in their quest for their first championship.
Ganguly, the ex-president of the BCCI, currently holds the position of Director of Cricket for DC. He manages the franchise’s affiliate teams, including the Dubai Capitals in ILT20 and the Pretoria Capitals in the SA T20 league.
While Sourav Ganguly’s association with Delhi Capitals would have undoubtedly generated significant buzz and excitement, the franchise has decided to stick with a new approach and will be eager to find an ardent successor to Ricky Ponting.
